The Board of Directors of SENH has lined up a busy spring schedule for our members. Read on in this newsletter to find out about the SENH activities that have been planned.
March Membership Meeting
The next membership meeting will be held on March 19th in Concord, NH. A representative from the Northern New England Concrete Promotion Association will give a presentation on concrete admixtures including chemical, fly ash, slag, silica fume, fiber reinforcement, etc. It has been some time since we have had a meeting presentation on concrete so this subject matter should prove to be quite informative to our membership. There will also be a brief presentation on Qualification Based Selection by the QBS Coalition at this meeting. The meeting announcement enclosed in this mailing will provide more information on the speaker, subject, meeting content and registration.
The Board of Directors would again like to inform you of the importance of sending in your meeting reservation by the RSVP date. We must receive your check and a list of names of the people who will be attending the meeting, or you must contact the Program Director, no later than the RSVP date. We cannot guarantee seating space or a meal for late registrations or members who show up to the meeting unannounced. Please help the Board of Directors and the Program Director by sending in your reservation check with names of attendees, or by contacting the Program Director with this information by the RSVP date. If late registrations continue to be a problem, the Board may decide to charge a late fee or not accept late registrations! Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Board of Director Nominations
There are two (2) vacancies on the Board of Directors beginning in May 1998. The Board has nominated Dennis LaBombard, PE of LaBombard Engineering and Bob Durfee, PE of Hoyle, Tanner & Associates to fill these vacancies. These positions are both two year terms that will expire in May of 2000. The Board is seeking and encouraging nominations from the membership. Nominees must have the written endorsement signed by three members. Nominations must be received by the Board of Directors no later than March 31, 1998. If you are interested in working on the Board or know a good candidate for the Board, please come forward with a nomination!
Q & A Forum
The Question and Answer (Q & A) Forum is an excellent way for you to get answers to those tough technical questions. Let the knowledge of over 140 members with their years of experience come to your aid. Please forward your technical questions to Jeff Nawrocki at fax #431-2811 by Monday, March 16th. All questions will be discussed at our March 19th meeting and answers published in the next membership newsletter.
We are in need of a logo for SENH. The Board of Directors is sponsoring a logo contest to receive ideas on an SENH logo. If the Board uses your logo or your ideas for a logo, you will receive a free registration for an SENH membership meeting. Sample logos already suggested by the Board will be on display at the March 19th meeting. Logo suggestions from the membership will be received by the Board until March 31th.
The Board of Directors is interested in starting up a web site for SENH and has authorized the formation of a Committee to explore means, methods and costs for starting up and maintaining a web site on the internet. Approximately 70% of our members have access to the internet and the Board feels this may be an excellent way to improve communication and disseminate information to our members. If you have an interest in participating on this committee, please contact Bob Durfee at e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org, or telephone: 603-669-5555. Committee members should have access to the internet either at home or at work. Professional Development Hours (PDH's) can be earned for participation on this committee.
For those members who did not attend our January 13th meeting, you will find enclosed in this mailing the Membership Roster effective December, 1997.
If you have not paid your 1998 dues you will find a second renewal notice in this mailing. This will be the last notice from the Board of Directors. Members whose dues are not renewed by March 31st will become inactive, be removed from the mailing list, and will no longer receive SENH mailings and other information. Please help SENH meet its financial commitments by renewing your dues in a timely manner.
A copy of the 1997 Treasurers Report is enclosed. If you have any questions, contact Fred Emanual, Treasurer, at Telephone #772-4400.
Two N.H. law firms are seeking an SENH member to act as an arbitrator in a case in Merrimack County Superior Court. If you are interested in providing this service, contact Bob Durfee ASAP @ Tel. 669-5555, who will put you in touch with these firms.
The Engineer as Public Servant
In a fanatical country, a priest, a lawyer and an engineer have been held hostage for months and are about to be guillotined. The priest puts his head on the block, they pull the rope, but nothing happens. The ruler declares that the priest has been saved by divine intervention so they let him go. The lawyer is next on the block and again, the rope doesn't release the blade. The ruler declares that by international law, they cannot attempt to execute him twice so he is also set free. Then they grab the engineer and shove his head into the guillotine. He looks up at the release mechanism and says, "Wait a minute, I think I see your problem".
See you at the March 19th meeting
