Greetings to all members!

As we begin the new year, our organization continues to be very busy with activities for our membership. Read on in this newsletter to find out what is going on in your organization.

March, 1999 Membership Meeting

The next scheduled membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at CR Sparks in Manchester, NH. Our speaker will be Mr. David C. May from the OSHA Office in Concord, who will make a presentation on job site safety for the design professional. This will be our first joint meeting with NH-AIA and we anticipate a very good turnout from both organizations. More information on this meeting is provided in this mailing.

January 12th Meeting

Our January 12th Membership Meeting was held in Concord. Our speaker was Steven P. Noon from Simpson Strong Tie, who gave a very informative presentation on pre-engineered/pre-manufactured steel connectors for timber. His presentation covered proper and improper installation techniques, product availability, design issues and cost. All members who attend this meeting received a complete product catalog on Simpson Strong Tie timber connections and adhesive anchor systems. Minutes of this meeting are provided in this mailing.

Board of Directors Nominations

Three (3) vacancies will occur on the Board of Directors in June. The current Board has nominated three (3) members to fill these vacancies as follows:

         Ray Cowan, PE - SFC Engineering Partnership

         David Konieczny, PE - Pyramid Engineering

         Ben Tirey, PE - Tirey & Associates

The Board encourages nominations from the membership. Nominations from the membership must be endorsed by three (3) members and must be received by the Board of Directors no later than March 31st. The elections for Director positions will occur at the annual meeting in May.

Engineers Week Banquet

The Annual Engineers Week banquet will be held on Thursday, February 25, 1999. I am very pleased to announce that SENH member Art Rose, PE will be the recipient of the Engineer of the Year Award. I encourage our membership to attend in order to recognize Art for this award. A press release is enclosed that provides more information.

Treasurer's Report

The 1998 Treasurer's Report is enclosed for your review. If you have any questions, please contact Fred Emanuel, Treasurer.

Membership List

For all current members of SENH in good standing, enclosed you will find the member/associate member list as of 12/31/98. This list is being provided to members only and is for their sole benefit. The Board of Directors discourages members from using this list for solicitation purposes or from copying, disseminating or providing its contents to other than SENH members.

Second Notice - Dues Renewal

Just a reminder for those who haven't yet paid your dues that you will be in arrears if your dues are not paid by February 28, 1999. Please pay your dues as soon as possible in order for SENH to meet its financial commitments. A dues renewal notice is included in this mailing if you have not yet paid your dues.

Continuing Education Committee

The Board has authorized the creation of a Continuing Education Committee to assist NCSEA in recommending a uniform standard for continuing education by structural engineers. The Committee is looking for assistance in order to complete its tasks. If you have an interest in serving on this committee, please contact Art Rose, PE, Chairman.

Student Committee

The Board of Directors has authorized the creation of a Student Member Activity Committee. This Committee will look into possible activities, membership status and joint meetings with student members. If you are interested in serving on this Committee, please contact Matt Severson, PE, Chairman.

SENH Web Site (www.senh.org)

The SENH web site is up and running! The Web Site Committee has worked hard and has put together a 1st class web page for our organization. Check it out at www.senh.org. If you have any feedback comments, or something you would like to post on our web site, contact the web master, Matt Low, PE.

NCSEA Monthly Moments

The November and December issues of Monthly Moments are enclosed for your review.

NCSEA Design Awards

NCSEA is announcing their Annual Design Awards competition. Nominations are being sought for outstanding project designs in three different categories. More information on the design awards will appear in the NCSEA Monthly Moments this spring. In the interim, please give some serious thought to submitting an entry for this competition. SENH will review all nominations and select one from our organization to be forwarded to NCSEA. SENH will pay all entry fees. Project entries must be forwarded to the SENH Board of Directors no later than May 1, 1999.

The Engineer's Dictionary of Construction

Contractor : A gambler who never gets to shuffle, cut, or deal.
Bid Opening : A poker game in which the losing hand wins.
Bid : A wild guess carried out to two decimal places.
Low Bidder : A contractor who is wondering what he left out.
Engineers Estimate : The cost of construction in heaven.
Project Manager : The conductor of an orchestra in which every musician is in a different union.
Critical Path Method : A management technique for losing your shirt under perfect control.
Strike : An effort to increase egg production by strangling the chicken.
Delayed Payment : A tourniquet applied at the pockets.
Completion Date : The point at which liquidated damages begin.
Liquidated Damages : A penalty for failing to achieve the impossible.
Auditor : People who go in after the war is lost and bayonet the wounded.
Lawyer : People who go in after the auditors and strip the bodies.
