Greetings to all members!

Our organization continues to be very busy with activities for our membership.  Read on in this newsletter to find out what is going on in the organization.

May, 1999 Annual Membership Meeting

The annual membership meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at The Yard and Courtyard Restaurant, in Manchester, NH.  Our speakers will be Mr. Peter Stamnas, PE and Mr. James Moore, PE from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation.  They will give a presentation on Department policy, design philosophy and details on integral abutment bridge design.  Mr. Darren Conboy, PE will summarize the recently completed integral bridge provisions for the Mass Highway Department.  More information on this meeting is provided in this mailing.

March 16^th Meeting

Our March 16^th Membership Meeting was held in Manchester.  Mr. David C. May from the OSHA office in Concord gave a presentation on job site safety for the design professional.  All members who attend this meeting received an OSHA inspection booklet.  Minutes of this meeting are provided in this mailing.

Board of Directors Nominations

Three (3) vacancies will occur on the Board of Directors in June.   The Board has nominated three (3) members to fill these vacancies as follows:

            Ray Cowan, PE - SFC Engineering Partnership
            David Konieczny, PE - Pyramid Engineering
            Ben Tirey, PE - Tirey & Associates

The elections for Director positions will occur at the annual meeting on May 11^th.  

Final Notice - Dues Renewal

A few members haven't yet paid their dues for 1999.  If you are one of these members, please pay your dues by April 30^th.  Members not current after this date will be dropped from the membership roster.

SENH Web Site (www.senh.org)

The SENH web site has been revised based on some excellent feedback comments from the membership.  We are now posting employment opportunities on the site.  Check it out at www.senh.org.  If you would like to post a want ad, or if you have something you would like to post on our web site, contact the web master, Matt Low, PE.

The Engineer and the Laws of Work

If you can’t get your work done in the first 24 hours, work nights.
A pat on the back is only a few centimeters from a kick in the butt.
Don’t be irreplaceable, if you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted.
It doesn’t matter what you do, it only matters what you say you’ve done and what you’re going to do.
You can go anywhere you want if you look serious and carry a clipboard.
When the bosses talk about improving productivity, they are never talking about themselves.
There will always be beer cans rolling on the floor of your car when the boss asks for a ride home from the office.
Everything can be filed under “miscellaneous”.
Never delay the ending of a meeting or the beginning of a cocktail hour.
Anyone can do any amount of work provided it isn’t the work he/she is supposed to be doing.
Important letters that contain no errors will develop errors in the mail.
If you are good, you will be assigned all the work.  If you are really good, you will get out of it.
You are always doing something marginal when the boss drops by your desk.
People who go to conferences are the ones who shouldn’t.
If it wasn’t for the last minute, nothing would get done.
Following the rules will not get the job done.
Getting the job done is no excuse for not following the rules.
No matter how much you do, you never do enough.
The last person that quit or was fired will be held responsible for everything that goes wrong.
